IQ / Gifted testing

Barna Psychology offers IQ and gifted testing to gain a deeper understanding of how your child thinks, remembers, and processes information. IQ results can provide general insights into your child's abilities, determine their eligibility for gifted programs, or be part of a comprehensive evaluation.

In Florida, gifted identification typically involves a child showing superior intellectual ability, often indicated by an IQ score of 130 or higher, along with meeting specific characteristics of gifted students outlined in a standard scale or checklist.

Here are some common characteristics of gifted individuals, although not every gifted child exhibits all of these traits all the time:

  • Early alertness, even as infants

  • Quick learning and rapid thinking

  • Excellent memory

  • A rich vocabulary and the use of complex sentences at a young age

  • Advanced comprehension of word nuances, metaphors, and abstract concepts

  • Enjoyment of problem-solving, especially with numbers and puzzles

  • Self-initiated reading and writing skills during preschool years

  • Deep emotions and heightened sensitivity

  • Abstract, complex, logical, and insightful thinking

  • Idealism and a strong sense of justice from an early age

  • Concern for social and political issues and injustices

  • Longer attention span and intense focus

  • Frequent daydreaming and deep thinking

  • Quick acquisition of basic skills with minimal practice

  • Asking thought-provoking questions

  • A wide range of interests or intense focus in one particular area

  • Strong curiosity and a desire for experimentation

  • A tendency to connect ideas or things in unique ways

  • A keen and sometimes unconventional sense of humor

  • A drive to organize people or things through games or complex schemes

  • Vivid imagination, even including imaginary playmates during preschool years.

Understanding these characteristics can help identify giftedness and tailor educational approaches to your child's unique abilities and needs.
